Nigerian content creator and skit maker Esther Thomas, popularly known as Sunshine, has died following complications from fibroid surgery. Her death occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, and was confirmed by her family the following day through a statement shared on her official Instagram page.
In the emotional announcement, the family expressed deep sorrow while confirming the sudden loss of their daughter and sister. They disclosed that Sunshine passed away after undergoing surgery for fibroid, which was described as unsuccessful.
“We, the family of Esther Thomas, also known as Sunshine, with pain in our hearts, regret to announce the sudden demise of our beloved sister and daughter, who passed away on January 9, 2026, after an unsuccessful surgery,” the statement read.
The family further explained that Sunshine had been battling fibroid and had gone in for surgery in a bid to restore her health. However, complications reportedly arose, leading to her death. They added that arrangements were being made for her burial.
Following the announcement, tributes and expressions of grief poured in from fans, colleagues, and fellow content creators across social media, with many describing Sunshine as talented, vibrant, and full of life.
Meanwhile, fellow content creator Chidera Madu shared a detailed account of the events leading up to Sunshine’s death in a Facebook post. According to him, Sunshine began experiencing severe stomach pain in late December 2025, which progressively worsened.
He stated that on December 28, 2025, Sunshine complained of persistent stomach pain, which escalated by January 1, prompting her hospitalisation. Medical scans and tests reportedly revealed that she had fibroid growths, after which she was admitted and placed on medication at Orchid General Hospital.
Chidera alleged that, unknown to them at the time, Sunshine was not receiving adequate medical attention due to an ongoing doctors’ strike at the hospital. He claimed that she was only being given pain relief medication while awaiting proper treatment.
Concern reportedly arose on January 2 when no doctor was seen on duty. After questioning hospital staff and being informed that a doctor was on the way, Chidera said he decided to move Sunshine to another hospital for better care. Treatment reportedly continued at the new facility using scan results obtained from the previous hospital.
At the second hospital, doctors allegedly advised that Sunshine undergo immediate surgery as her condition deteriorated. The surgery was carried out and initially described as successful. However, she later developed complications, which ultimately led to her death.
Sunshine’s death has reignited conversations on social media about healthcare delivery, medical accountability, and patient safety in Nigeria, particularly amid reports of strikes and delayed treatment in some health facilities.
As reactions continue, many Nigerians are calling for greater transparency and improved standards in the healthcare system to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
