Reports indicate that Lakurawa fighters have attacked charcoal and firewood producers on the outskirts of Mai-Kurhuna village in the Kebbe Forest area of Kebbe Local Government Area, Sokoto State. The incident has raised serious concerns about the security of communities in the region, particularly those dependent on forestry and small-scale trade for their livelihoods.
The attack was disclosed on Thursday by conflict and crisis journalist Bakatsine, who regularly reports on insecurity in northwest Nigeria. According to the report, the assault resulted in civilian fatalities, widespread destruction of trucks and motorcycles, and the loss of livelihoods for those who survived.
Survivors of the attack fled the forest and are appealing for immediate intervention by security agencies to prevent further attacks and restore safety in the affected area.
Bakatsine wrote, "SAD NEWS: Lakurawa fighters reportedly attacked charcoal and firewood producers in the outskirts of Mai-Kurhuna village, Kebbe Forest area of Kebbe LGA, Sokoto State. The incident resulted in civilian fatalities, the destruction of trucks and motorcycles and the loss of livelihoods. Survivors fled the forest and are appealing for immediate security intervention to prevent further attacks and restore safety to the area."
He also raised concerns about the response of the relevant authorities, asking, "What immediate steps are the relevant authorities taking to secure the affected communities and provide assistance to those displaced?"
The attack underscores the growing insecurity challenges in northwestern Nigeria, where communities in remote forest areas face repeated threats from armed groups. Residents and local leaders continue to call on both state and federal authorities to step up protection, strengthen intelligence-led patrols, and provide urgent assistance to those affected.
As investigations continue, the incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of rural communities whose livelihoods depend on natural resources, and the urgent need for measures to safeguard lives and property in the region.
