A member of the Peoples Democratic Party and the Obidient Movement, Dickson Iroegbu, has alleged that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, now considers himself bigger than President Bola Tinubu.
Iroegbu made the claim on Friday during an interview on Prime Time, a programme aired on Arise Television and monitored by Daily Post. He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of giving Wike the political leverage that has allowed him to destabilize the opposition and, according to Iroegbu, threaten Nigeria’s democratic process.
“The truth of the matter is that APC, through the enabling of the president, gave Wike the platform which he has now used to almost attempt to scuttle democracy in Nigeria,” Iroegbu said. “They positioned him to wreck, undermine, and possibly annihilate the PDP. And having almost succeeded in that, he now thinks himself bigger than the president.”
Iroegbu further alleged that Wike’s recent conduct in Rivers State indicates an inflated sense of authority. He claimed that during meetings with some of his supporters, the minister reportedly stated that nobody, including national figures, could decide what happens in the state. Iroegbu described this as a sign of political overreach and a threat to the balance of power within Nigeria’s democratic system.
He added that Wike has become “larger than life” under the current administration and that his actions, fueled by the political support he received from APC, have created tensions within both the ruling and opposition parties. Iroegbu expressed hope that ongoing political struggles would ultimately allow Nigerians to reclaim control of their democracy.
The remarks by Iroegbu come amid increasing scrutiny of Wike’s political ambitions and influence since joining the federal government as FCT Minister. Critics argue that his political style in Rivers State, and more broadly, could exacerbate divisions within the PDP and across Nigeria’s political landscape.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Nyesom Wike nor representatives of the presidency had responded publicly to Iroegbu’s claims.
