Suspected gunmen on Saturday evening ambushed a Benue Links commercial bus conveying passengers in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving several people injured and causing fear among road users in the area.
The bus reportedly departed Makurdi en route to Lagos and was attacked a few minutes before it reached Otukpo town around a location popularly known as Burnt Bricks. Sources said the attackers lay in wait before suddenly opening fire on the fully loaded vehicle, forcing the driver to stop as passengers screamed and scrambled for safety.
At least three occupants of the bus were reportedly hit by bullets during the attack, while several other passengers managed to escape into nearby bushes to avoid being harmed. The incident caused panic in the area, as residents and passersby were unsure of the attackers’ next move.
The injured passengers were later rushed to the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital in Otukpo, where they are currently receiving medical attention. Medical sources said the victims were responding to treatment, although their identities had not been made public at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, security operatives were alerted to the incident and were said to have visited the scene. An investigation into the attack has commenced, although the motive behind the ambush remains unclear. The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of travelers along the Makurdi, Otukpo, and Lagos route, with residents calling on security agencies to intensify patrols and ensure the protection of lives and property.
