Anthony Joshua Breaks Silence After Backlash Over Friends’ Funeral

World-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua has finally addressed the criticism he faced after appearing calm at the funeral of two of his close friends who tragically died in a road accident.

The accident occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, in Makun, Ogun State. Reports indicate that the crash happened around 11 a.m. along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway, near Danco Filling Station, just before the Sagamu Interchange. Joshua was in the vehicle at the time, seated in the back, while two members of his team, Latif and Sina, lost their lives instantly. Latif served as Joshua’s personal trainer, while Sina was his strength and conditioning coach, both trusted companions who had worked closely with him for years.

Footage from the funeral service in the United Kingdom quickly went viral, showing Joshua in a composed and calm state. Many social media users misinterpreted his demeanor, claiming he appeared unaffected by the tragic loss. The online backlash was swift and intense, with critics questioning his emotional response and accusing him of insensitivity.

Joshua has now responded, speaking openly about his grief and the depth of his loss. On January 8, 2026, he shared heartfelt tribute graphics on his Instagram page, pouring out his emotions and honoring the memory of Latif and Sina. He admitted that he only fully realized the importance of his friends after their passing, describing their bond as filled with laughter, everyday conversations, and shared moments he once took for granted.

In his post, Joshua wrote, “Thank you for all the love and care you have shown my brothers. I did not even realise how special they are. I will just be walking with them and cracking jokes with them, not even knowing God kept me in the presence of great men. 100 percent it is tough for me, but I know it is even tougher for their parents. I have a strong mind, and I believe God knows their hearts. May God have mercy on my brothers.”

He also reflected on the pain faced by the families of the deceased, especially the parents, emphasizing that their loss is unimaginable. Joshua explained that while he is navigating his grief internally, he is leaning on faith and inner strength to cope with the tragedy.

The post has since received an outpouring of support from fans and followers, many praising Joshua for breaking the silence and highlighting that grief is personal and manifests differently for everyone. Supporters also commended him for reminding the public that composure at a funeral does not equate to a lack of emotion, particularly when processing a loss of such magnitude.

As of now, Joshua’s message serves both as a tribute to his late friends and a response to the social media criticism, shedding light on the personal and emotional journey he is navigating following the tragic accident.
