An Anglican priest in Anambra State has married a couple despite objections from the bride’s father, who insisted that she must swear an oath at a traditional shrine to sever all ties with her mother before the wedding could proceed.
The wedding reportedly took place in Onitsha on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
The priest, who narrated the incident in a video circulating online, said the bride’s father, identified as Ekene Aniukwu from Nteje in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, had approached him several times ahead of the wedding. According to the priest, the man claimed he had taken his ex wife, the bride’s mother, to a traditional deity over unresolved marital disputes.
He reportedly warned that if the marriage went ahead without compliance with his demands, the union would fail.
In an effort to maintain peace and allow the wedding to proceed, the priest said he initially advised the couple to comply with the father’s request. The parties reportedly went to the shrine with the required items for the ritual.
However, the situation escalated at the shrine when the bride’s father allegedly changed his position and insisted that the bride must swear an oath permanently cutting off her mother. The bride reportedly refused to take the oath and fled the shrine.
Following the incident, the priest said he decided to proceed with the wedding ceremony. He joined the couple in holy matrimony after offering prayers for them.
The incident has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians debating the clash between religious beliefs, traditional practices, and parental authority in marriage decisions.
