Rabat, Morocco. Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has publicly criticized the Confederation of African Football, CAF, following a controversial decision that saw Calvin Bassey’s first-half goal against Algeria disallowed in the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, 2025 quarter-final.
The disallowed goal came as Nigeria dominated the early stages of the match, creating multiple scoring opportunities. Replays showed that nearly the entire ball appeared to have crossed the goal line. However, the Senegalese referee’s on-field decision was upheld by VAR, leaving many fans and analysts questioning the ruling.
Ighalo, who was part of the Super Eagles squad that lost to Algeria in the 2019 AFCON semi-final, criticized the lack of goal-line technology in African football. Speaking on SuperSport, he said,
"It was a goal with an inch. For me, this is a goal with an inch. In a tournament like this, the biggest in Africa, we should have goal-line technology. In Europe, in the World Cup, they have proper line technology, and it works. The whole circumference of the ball has to cross the line to be ruled a goal."
The absence of such technology has been a longstanding issue in African football, with experts and fans repeatedly calling for its introduction in CAF competitions to avoid controversial decisions.
Despite the setback, Nigeria maintained control of the game. By the time this report was filed, the Super Eagles led 2-0, thanks to clinical finishes from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams, putting them in a strong position to advance to the semifinals.
The incident has reignited discussions about the need for CAF to modernize its officiating systems and align African football with international standards. Fans and former players alike have urged the governing body to invest in goal-line technology to prevent similar controversies in the future.
