Reactions continue to trail the killing of two policemen in Enugu State on Saturday night, while they were conducting stop and search operations on motorists. The attack has sparked outrage among residents and security experts, who are calling for urgent action.
The incident occurred around Zik’s Avenue, near Osondu bus stop, Uwani, Enugu. Eyewitnesses said the officers were ambushed while performing their duties. A motorist who witnessed the attack told our correspondent, “The invaders also burnt the police operations Hilux during the attack.”
Another source added that the gunmen opened fire on the police patrol vehicle stationed on the street. “The driver of the vehicle was shot while the second officer paid the supreme sacrifice in the ensuing gun duel,” the source said.
A video circulating on social media showed the patrol van engulfed in flames, while passersby expressed shock and fear. “The head of one of the operatives was shattered. These are family people. It is unfortunate,” one sympathiser said.
As of the time of reporting, the Enugu State Police Command had not issued any official statement regarding the development. Its Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, did not respond to inquiries sent to him.
Residents and community leaders have called on authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and strengthen security in the area. A security consultant, Charles Okpara, warned, “This should be tackled with all seriousness. Otherwise, the hoodlums might resume their ugly activities, which had halted following the launch of the state Security Control Room. If nothing is done to capture these criminals, the control room may be seen as just a political statement.”
Johnson Uwakwe, a student, also urged the state government to use its newly acquired drone to apprehend the attackers. “Let a statement be made this time around. With the drone, I think they will not escape. Enugu has been peaceful of late,” he said.
Security analysts have noted that the incident underscores the need for enhanced police presence and rapid response capabilities across the state, particularly in high-traffic urban areas such as Uwani. The killing of the officers has renewed fears about the safety of both residents and law enforcement personnel and raised questions about the effectiveness of recent security initiatives.
Residents continue to appeal to the state and federal authorities to ensure that criminal activities are curtailed and that the safety of citizens is prioritized.
