Families of seven construction workers kidnapped in Kwara State have appealed to the state government to intervene and secure the release of their loved ones.
The victims were reportedly abducted while carrying out construction work along the Sabaja Owa Onire Road, a route that residents say has become increasingly prone to criminal activity in recent months. The incident has sparked fear and anxiety in local communities, particularly among families whose relatives depend on daily income from similar construction and labour work.
At a press conference in Ilorin, the state capital, the families disclosed that the kidnappers are demanding a ransom of N500 million for the release of the workers. They described the ordeal as deeply traumatic, stressing that the abduction has left wives, children, and elderly parents in distress.
“We are appealing to the Kwara State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue our loved ones. We also solicit immediate support for the affected families while they await the safe return of the abducted workers,” the families said.
Local security analysts have warned that the growing spate of kidnappings along the route underscores the urgent need for heightened vigilance and more coordinated policing. Residents are calling for improved patrols and rapid response measures to ensure that workers, commuters, and traders can move safely along vulnerable highways.
As of now, authorities have not released an official statement on the case, and it is unclear whether negotiations with the kidnappers are ongoing or if any operations have been launched to rescue the victims.
The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in Kwara State and the broader region, where kidnappings for ransom have become a recurring concern, raising questions about the effectiveness of current security measures and the protection of vulnerable communities.
