Gunmen Abduct Six Passengers, Including Driver, Along Nsukka–Adani Road in Enugu

Gunmen have abducted six passengers, including the driver, along the Nsukka Adani Road in Uzo Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, raising renewed concerns over security on the busy highway.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, December 26, 2025, when a commercial bus travelling along the route was intercepted by armed assailants. According to sources familiar with the incident, the attackers blocked the road, forced the vehicle to stop, and opened fire, prompting passengers to flee in panic. While several passengers escaped by running into the surrounding bush, six others, including the driver, were abducted. The identities of the victims have not been fully disclosed.

Residents of the area described the Nsukka Adani axis as a notorious hotspot for criminal activities, particularly during the early morning hours. Despite repeated warnings about traveling at such times, the road remains a crucial route for commuters, traders, and residents who rely on it daily for work, school, and other activities.

A community leader in Adani, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the abduction and blamed the attack on the dangers of early morning travel along the route. “That road is very dangerous, especially in the early hours of the day,” the leader said. “At night, police patrols are common, while during the day local vigilante groups take over. On that morning, the driver was warned to wait until the vigilantes resumed duty, but he ignored the advice.”

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no ransom demand, and security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Residents are calling for a permanent and consistent security presence along the route to prevent further attacks.

The abduction comes amid growing concerns over kidnapping and violent crimes in parts of Enugu State, despite assurances from security authorities that efforts are being intensified to protect commuters and residents. On December 1, 2025, the state governor, Peter Mbah, unveiled two security drones and a fleet of operational vehicles as part of renewed efforts to tackle violent crimes across the state. The governor emphasized the need for more equipment and rapid response capabilities to combat criminals effectively.

Authorities are reportedly investigating the incident, and efforts are being made to trace the abductors and secure the release of the victims. Residents of nearby communities have expressed fear and frustration, highlighting the urgent need for improved security along the route, which serves thousands of people daily.

Further updates are expected as officials continue their investigations and rescue operations.
