A United States lawmaker, Riley Moore, has accused the Federal Government of Nigeria of failing to justify the billions of dollars in military assistance it has received from Washington. He alleged that Christians in the country continue to face widespread killings and persecution.
Moore, who chairs an investigative committee established by former United States President Donald Trump to examine the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, made the comments during an interview on The Dinesh D’Souza Show on Thursday night.
During the interview, Moore expressed deep concern over what he described as the continued silence from both Nigerian authorities and the international community.
“My brothers and sisters in Christ are being murdered for practising their faith and belief in our Lord Jesus Christ,” Moore said. “For years, the Nigerian government and the world have remained silent while Christians are targeted, killed, and displaced.”
He warned that the ongoing violence could have serious and far-reaching consequences if left unaddressed.
“If we do not act now and terrorists take firm control in Nigeria, the situation will eventually become a global threat. I would prefer that we work together with Nigerians to solve this problem before it escalates further,” he added.
The United States lawmaker criticised the Nigerian government for what he described as a lack of urgency in protecting vulnerable Christian communities, despite receiving significant support from the United States.
“There is an opportunity to partner effectively, and I am hoping that the Nigerian government will show readiness to do so. The United States has provided billions of dollars in security assistance, including training and equipment, yet this issue remains unresolved,” Moore explained.
He lamented that the killings and attacks on Christian communities have continued quietly for years without attracting adequate international attention.
“The capacity to address this crisis exists, but no one seems to care enough to act. For too long, this tragedy has been ignored. If we as Christians cannot stand up for our people and for the values we hold dear, then we are failing in our duty,” Moore said.
Describing the situation as a “forgotten genocide,” he called on Nigeria and its international allies to take immediate and concrete action to end the killings and bring those responsible to justice.
Earlier, Moore announced that he would soon present a detailed report to Donald Trump. In a message shared on social media, he wrote, “Thank you, President Trump, for your incredible leadership in defending persecuted Christians, especially in Nigeria. Your bold and decisive action will save thousands of lives. I am on it and will have more updates soon.”
In a separate post on his Truth Social platform, Donald Trump reiterated his concern, describing the situation in Nigeria as a humanitarian and religious crisis.
“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed, and radical Islamist groups are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am declaring Nigeria a country of particular concern as defined under United States law,” Trump stated.
Trump also urged American lawmakers to act quickly, warning that the United States “cannot stand by while such atrocities continue.” He said Washington might consider stronger measures, including possible military intervention, if the killings persist.
In response, the Federal Government of Nigeria strongly rejected the allegations and denied that the violence amounts to genocide. Officials said that the country’s security challenges affect both Christians and Muslims, and that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees full religious freedom for all citizens.
The government added that security agencies are working tirelessly to combat terrorism, banditry, and communal conflicts across the nation.
