The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of two female bodies believed to be among three Cameroonian women who were allegedly kidnapped in the state. The bodies were discovered in the Omambala River, located in Anambra West Local Government Area, following days of intensive search operations.
In a press statement released on Saturday, the command’s spokesman, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, stated that the discovery came after officers from the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, collaborated with professional divers and local volunteers on Friday evening to comb the river and surrounding areas. Both bodies have been deposited in a mortuary for further examination and investigative procedures.
SP Ikenga said, “The Anambra State Police Command wishes to update the public on the ongoing investigation into the alleged kidnapping of three Cameroonian women in the state. Recall that police investigators had earlier arrested two suspects, Nonso Augustine Akpeh, 37, and Kingsley Akpeh, 44, who are currently assisting operatives with vital information.
“In continuation of these efforts, on the evening of 28 November 2025, police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, working with professional river divers and local volunteers, conducted an intensive search along the Omambala River. During the operation, the team recovered two female decomposed bodies believed to be victims of the kidnapping incident. The operatives immediately contacted the family of the kidnapped victims, who positively identified the recovered bodies as his wife, Mrs Bognou Alice, and his niece, Miss Sandra. Both bodies have been deposited in a mortuary for further examination and necessary investigative procedures.”
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. He directed that search efforts be intensified to locate the remaining missing victim, and ordered all units involved to increase operational activities aimed at apprehending the third suspect, Uchenna Nicholas Mmadu, who is currently at large. The CP reassured the public that the command remains committed to protecting lives, maintaining security, and ensuring justice is served.
This tragic incident comes amid a growing concern over kidnappings and violent crime in Anambra State. Earlier in February, PUNCH Online reported the discovery of the lifeless body of Justice Azuka, the Onitsha North 1 Constituency representative in the Anambra State House of Assembly, along the 2nd Niger Bridge.
Authorities continue to appeal to the public to provide any information that could assist in apprehending the fugitive suspect and preventing further crimes, as the police intensify their efforts to restore safety in affected communities.
