Nigerian Military Rescues 12 Girls Abducted by ISWAP in Borno

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully rescued 12 girls abducted by Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists in the Mussa District of Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State. The victims, aged between 15 and 20 years, were kidnapped last Sunday while harvesting crops on farmlands belonging to their families.

The abductions created fear across several communities in the southern Borno axis. The area has suffered repeated attacks and kidnappings linked to ISWAP cells operating around forested locations near the Sambisa and Mandara regions. Local vigilantes and community leaders immediately raised an alarm, and this prompted a swift response from the military.

The rescued girls have been identified as

Fatima Shaibu, aged 17, Fatima Umaru, aged 15, Hauwa Abubakar, aged 18, Saliha Muhammed, aged 15, Sadiya Umaru, aged 17, Amira Babel, aged 15, Zara Adamu, aged 17, Nana Shaibu, aged 15, Zainab Musa, aged 18, Zainab Muhammed, aged 17, Jamila Saidu, aged 15 and Hauwa Hamidu, aged 17.

According to military sources, the girls were found during an intensive clearance operation carried out in surrounding bushes and small hideouts used by fleeing insurgents. The troops engaged the terrorists in a brief exchange of gunfire. The attackers abandoned the captives and retreated deeper into the forest.

After their rescue, the girls were moved to a secure military location for medical evaluation, psychological support and profiling. Officials stated that the victims will be reunited with their families once the required procedures have been completed to ensure their safety and well being.

The successful operation is part of renewed offensives launched by troops in the southern Borno corridor. These efforts aim to dismantle ISWAP strongholds and reduce the rise in attacks on rural communities. Security forces have increased ground patrols, air reconnaissance and coordinated intelligence gathering to prevent further abductions and to restore confidence among local farmers preparing for the harvest season.

Military authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying the fight against insurgency and ensuring the safe return of all citizens affected by terrorist activities in the region.
