Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed serious concern over the recent designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) by the United States government.
The U.S. President Donald Trump recently made the designation, warning that the U.S. could consider military intervention if the alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria do not stop.
Reacting in a statement on Monday, Obi described the development as deeply troubling and said it should serve as a wake-up call for Nigerian leaders. He admitted that the issue of insecurity did not start with the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but stressed that the situation has worsened due to poor governance and lack of effective leadership.
“The recent pronouncement by the U.S. government declaring Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern,” Obi said. “There is no doubt that Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented level of insecurity with attendant carnage and the most shocking loss of lives and property.”
Citing data from Amnesty International, Obi noted that over 10,000 Nigerians have been killed since May 2023, calling the situation unprovoked and unwarranted. He added that much of the violence could have been avoided if there were competent and patriotic leaders managing the country’s affairs.
While acknowledging that the insecurity crisis predates the Tinubu administration, Obi faulted the current APC-led government for lacking competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism, and passion to effectively address the problem.
He further urged the Nigerian and U.S. governments to maintain their long-standing diplomatic relationship, emphasizing that both nations must engage constructively to tackle Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation.
“As democracies, Nigeria and the U.S. have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter. Both countries must work in concert and expeditiously towards addressing these disturbing security concerns,” Obi said.
