A former mayor from Blanco, Texas, Mike Arnold, has publicly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s recent ambassadorial nominations, describing Nigeria as a “disgraced, corrupt nation” following the inclusion of former presidential aide Reno Omokri.
Naija News reports that President Tinubu submitted 32 new ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation on Saturday. Among the nominees were Omokri and former Minister Femi Fani-Kayode, both of whom have been controversial figures in Nigerian politics.
Reacting on Facebook, Arnold accused the President of prioritizing loyalty and personal connections over competence and professionalism. He described the appointments as tone deaf and argued that they send a negative message to young Nigerians about the values required to succeed in the country.
Arnold stated, “With his recently announced ambassadorial appointments, Tinubu again proves not only to be tone deaf, but deaf, dumb and blind. The world is watching. Appointing Omokri and FFK reveals that he values money-grubbing, boot-licking, genocide-denying sycophants who flip-flop on issues of substance on command over those who show even a shred of competence or integrity. He is further confirming himself to be a corrupt dictator who does not care one bit about the unity of Nigeria or her everyday citizens.”
He further highlighted the implications of the appointments on Nigeria’s youth, saying, “What does this shameful tit-for-tat rewarding of slimy actors tell Nigerian children? It tells them that to advance in Nigeria today, the first step is to sell your soul and abandon any hint of honour. This is truly shameful.”
The remarks have sparked debate on social media and in political circles, with many questioning the integrity and merit of the new nominees, as well as the broader message these appointments send about governance, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria.
Critics argue that such appointments reinforce perceptions of nepotism and political favoritism, raising concerns about the credibility of Nigeria’s diplomatic corps in representing the country internationally.
