Edo Police Vow to Rescue Kidnapped Couple After Distressing Social Media Videos

The Edo State Police Command has assured residents that it is working tirelessly to secure the safe release of a couple reportedly kidnapped in Aviele, Etsako West Local Government Area. Disturbing videos of the victims pleading for help have circulated widely on social media, showing them appealing for public assistance while their abductors allegedly demanded a ransom of N50 million.

In one of the clips, the kidnappers issued chilling threats, warning that they would harm the pregnant wife if the ransom was not paid. The videos have sparked widespread concern among local communities, drawing attention to the growing threat of kidnapping in the state and prompting urgent calls for swift police action.

Reacting to the incident, the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Moses Yamu, said that operatives immediately launched a full-scale investigation and activated rescue operations once the matter was reported. He assured the public that anyone found to have played any role in the crime, directly or indirectly, would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“The attention of the Edo State Police Command has been drawn to a video circulating on social media alleging the kidnapping of a couple in Aviele, Edo North,” Yamu said in a statement on Friday. “Upon receiving the information, all necessary operational and investigative measures were immediately activated to ensure the victims’ safe rescue and to apprehend those responsible. The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a comprehensive investigation, and all individuals found to be complicit, whether directly or indirectly, will be arrested and prosecuted in line with existing laws.”

He further urged residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and continue providing credible tips that could aid the ongoing investigation. Yamu emphasized the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives, maintaining security, and ensuring justice is delivered swiftly to the perpetrators.

The Edo State Police Command has deployed specialized units to track the abductors and has intensified patrols across Edo North while working closely with local vigilantes and community leaders to gather intelligence on the whereabouts of the victims. Sources within the command revealed that efforts include monitoring ransom demands, examining phone records, and liaising with social media platforms to trace those responsible for the circulation of the videos.

This latest incident underscores a growing concern over the rise of kidnapping cases in Edo State, particularly targeting families in semi-urban and rural communities. Residents have expressed fear over the safety of their loved ones, especially women and children, highlighting the urgent need for increased community vigilance and coordinated security responses.

Police have reassured the public that updates will continue to be provided as developments unfold. They reiterated that no effort will be spared in ensuring the safe return of the couple and bringing the kidnappers to justice. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of collaboration between the authorities and the community to prevent such criminal acts and enhance public safety in Edo State and beyond.
