A newly wedded groom, Muhammad Sani Maru, has been shot dead by bandits in Maru, the headquarters of Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State, while his bride and several guests were abducted during a violent attack on Sunday night.
According to reports by The Sun, residents confirmed that the bandits invaded the community, targeting the home of the newly married couple. Eyewitness Malam Usman recounted that the attackers ordered the groom to follow them into the forest, but he refused.
“I was listening when they asked him to ride on one of the motorcycles, but he insisted that he wouldn’t go to the forest,” Usman said. “When the bandits realized that he was not ready to follow them, one of them shot him in the head, killing him instantly.”
Usman added that the bandits kidnapped the bride along with seven others, including four men and three women.
Residents described the attack as one of many that have plagued Maru town, which remains among the areas in Zamfara State most affected by bandit violence.
In previous attacks, the town reportedly lost several key figures, including Divisional Police Officer Kazeem Raheem, two police officers, and Chief Imam Salisu Sulaiman. Many locals have also been abducted over time, with millions of naira paid as ransom for their release
