A heartbreaking tragedy struck on Saturday morning after a 39-year-old Nigerian man, identified as Chukwuemeka Aniawona, reportedly died just hours before he was scheduled to board a flight abroad.
The deceased, said to be from Aba, Abia State, was preparing to travel via EgyptAir when the unexpected incident occurred. According to reports circulating on social media, Chukwuemeka’s lifeless body was discovered along Airport Road, sparking sorrow and disbelief among Nigerians online.
The news was first shared by a user identified as Candy on X (formerly Twitter), who described the scene in detail and called the situation “painful and shocking.”
“I saw a male body lying lifeless today on Airport Road. It was likely a hit-and-run incident,” Candy wrote. “He was to check in for his flight due for takeoff at 2 p.m. via EgyptAir. His phone wasn’t in sight, so it must’ve been stolen. His backpack was torn, and his clothes were scattered on the floor. They probably went away with his money too. It was an accident.”
Candy further revealed that the man’s international passport and personal items were found scattered near his body. The passport identified him as Chukwuemeka Aniawona, born October 27, 1985. According to her, scraps of a vehicle suspected to have hit him were also visible at the scene, suggesting a hit-and-run collision.
She also alleged that the victim’s mobile phone and possibly cash were missing, raising concerns that he may have been robbed after the accident.
Videos shared online showed the victim’s belongings including his international passport, torn backpack, and clothing spread across the road. The tragic scene has since gone viral, prompting widespread condolences and debate about safety and emergency response in the country.
Social media users have described the incident as deeply tragic, with many lamenting how a man set to begin a new life abroad lost his life just hours before his journey. The term “Japa” a popular slang for Nigerians emigrating in search of better opportunities trended alongside the story.
