Nigerian comedian and actor, Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has cautioned Nigerians against falling for the deceptive appearances of luxury often portrayed on social media.
In a video shared on his Instagram page on Thursday, the comedian highlighted how many people are misled by the glamorous lives flaunted online, describing most of them as “staged realities.”
AY noted that social media has become a platform where individuals project false images of wealth, happiness, and success, often creating unnecessary pressure on their followers.
According to him, some influencers and celebrities go as far as borrowing wigs, outfits, and cars, or posing in hotel lobbies and luxurious homes that don’t belong to them, all to appear successful.
“Many of these celebrities you envy are living on borrowed wigs, borrowed outfits, and borrowed lifestyles,” AY said. “Some take pictures in hotel lobbies and call them their new homes, while others pose with cars that don’t belong to them. Social media is like a movie set; not everything you see online is real.”
He urged his fans to focus on personal growth rather than comparing themselves to people who only showcase illusions of success.
The comedian concluded by advising his followers to “grow at their own pace,” stay true to themselves, and embrace simplicity and authenticity in their lives.
