Afrobeats singer and Grammy-winning songwriter Tems has sparked fresh conversations online after boldly reminding fans of her contribution to the global hit song “Essence.”
Taking to her Instagram story, the soulful artist made it clear that while Essence undoubtedly changed lives, proper credit must not be forgotten.
“They keep saying Essence changed lives — true. But let’s not forget who penned it. Love Wiz, but his fans be moving mad sometimes,” she wrote.
Released in 2020 by Wizkid featuring Tems, Essence became an international anthem, topping charts across the globe and earning recognition as one of the biggest African songs ever.
Tems’ post has reignited the long-standing discussion about songwriting credits and artistic recognition, particularly in collaborations where featured artists often get overshadowed by the lead act.
While Tems made it clear that she still has love for Wizkid, her message seemed directed at his fanbase — popularly known as Wizkid FC — who she implied often overlook her creative contribution.
Tems, who continues to make waves internationally, recently cemented her legacy with another Grammy win. On February 2, 2025, at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles, she took home the Best African Music Performance award for her soulful hit “Love Me Jeje.”
This marks Tems’ second Grammy win, following her 2023 victory for Best Melodic Rap Performance on “Wait For U” with Future and Drake.
