Several passengers sustained varying degrees of injury on Thursday morning, October 30, when two Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses were involved in a collision at the Mangoro area of Lagos.
The accident occurred within the BRT lane along the busy Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, at Onipetesi, in Ikeja. Witnesses said the crash caused panic among commuters and led to a heavy traffic gridlock on the expressway.
According to eyewitness accounts, one of the BRT buses had swerved suddenly to avoid a commercial bus that illegally entered the restricted BRT lane. In a desperate attempt to prevent a collision, the driver reportedly lost control, veering into another BRT bus coming from the opposite direction.
“The driver was trying to avoid hitting the commercial bus that suddenly drove into the BRT lane,” an eyewitness said. “Unfortunately, in that process, he rammed into another BRT coming from the other side.”
Videos shared online show the two buses severely damaged, with shattered windshields and injured passengers being helped out of the vehicles. Emergency responders and concerned bystanders quickly arrived at the scene to assist in rescuing victims and transporting them to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency agencies later moved in to control the situation. The affected section of the road was temporarily closed to traffic while efforts were made to tow the damaged buses and clear the obstruction.
Authorities have confirmed that no fatalities were recorded, though several passengers were injured.
