A dramatic scene unfolded aboard an Ibom Air flight yesterday after a male passenger was allegedly caught stealing ₦290,000 from the luggage of a foreign national. The incident, which left many passengers shocked and angry, has since sparked discussions about in-flight security and passenger vigilance.
According to multiple eyewitnesses, the suspect had boarded the flight like every other traveller and initially appeared calm and composed. However, moments after passengers settled in, he reportedly stood up, opened the overhead luggage compartment, and moved a bag belonging to a foreign passenger. The action initially went unnoticed by most people on board.
Trouble began when the foreign passenger noticed his luggage was missing shortly after and raised an alarm, prompting flight attendants and nearby passengers to search the cabin. A vigilant female passenger quickly pointed at the suspect, claiming she had seen him tampering with the foreigner’s bag minutes earlier.
A thorough search was conducted on the spot, and to everyone’s surprise, the missing ₦290,000 was found neatly tucked under the suspect’s seat. The discovery caused a stir among passengers, many of whom expressed disbelief that such an act could occur mid-flight.
The situation became even more suspicious when the suspect’s own carry-on bag was opened and found to contain only a single shirt, leading many to suspect that the theft was premeditated.
Flight attendants promptly alerted airport security authorities, who were waiting on the ground when the plane landed. The suspect was escorted off the aircraft amid jeers and condemnation from angry passengers.
A video of the incident, now circulating widely on social media, shows the moment the suspect was led away by officials, looking visibly ashamed. Many Nigerians online have praised the alertness of the female passenger who exposed him, while others are calling for stricter baggage monitoring and random checks on domestic flights.
Ibom Air is yet to issue an official statement on the matter as of press time.
