Gunmen have abducted a nursing mother, her husband, and two other women in the Ndegwu community, Umunwoha, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, on Wednesday night.
According to eyewitness reports, the armed men suspected to be herdsmen stormed a shop near the community farmland around 8 p.m., wearing military camouflage and armed with AK-47 rifles. They fired several gunshots into the air before seizing their victims.
One of the women later managed to escape and shared her harrowing experience.
“When they arrived, we thought they were soldiers. They approached us as if they wanted to buy something, but suddenly pulled out their guns and ordered us to follow them,” she said. “I mustered the courage to run into the bush. They shot at me, but thankfully, I wasn’t hit.”
The escapee explained that after being taken into the bush, the gunmen eventually released the nursing mother following her husband’s plea, as she was caring for a baby. The attackers, however, kept the husband and another victim identified as Odinaka and took them to an unknown location.
Efforts by local vigilante groups and neighboring communities to locate the abducted individuals have so far been unsuccessful.
