Ghana is in mourning following the passing of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the country’s former First Lady, who died at the age of 76 after a short illness.
She was the wife of the late Jerry John Rawlings, Ghana’s longest-serving leader, who passed away in 2020. Together, they were one of Ghana’s most influential political couples, shaping the nation’s direction for decades.
As First Lady, Nana Konadu was known for her strength, activism, and lifelong commitment to women’s empowerment. In the early 1980s, she founded the 31st December Women’s Movement, a groundbreaking organization aimed at equipping women with the skills and resources to become financially independent and lead community development efforts.
Her work through the movement transformed lives across Ghana from rural development projects to advocacy for gender equality and access to education. Many credit her as one of the pioneers of the modern women’s movement in Ghana.
Tributes have flooded social media, with citizens, politicians, and global figures celebrating her legacy. Presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed her passing on Thursday morning, describing her as “a woman of great courage and purpose.”
Nana Konadu’s life and contributions will be remembered as a vital chapter in Ghana’s history one marked by vision, empowerment, and service to the nation.
