The family of the late Anambra-born journalist, media consultant, and cultural ambassador, High Chief Dr. Eze Harris Udokamma Stephen Chuma-Odili, popularly known as Ogene Ogbunike or Eze Odinana, has officially announced the schedule for his burial rites.
According to a statement signed by Chief Arch. Obi Odili (Ozoebube) on behalf of the family, the funeral activities will commence on Friday, October 24, 2025, with a Night of Tributes at Obi Ogene, Ogbunike, starting at 5:00 p.m.
The following day, Saturday, October 25, 2025, a Funeral Mass will be held at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Azu Ogbunike (Ogbamgba), beginning at 10:00 a.m., after which condolence visits will take place at the deceased’s compound. The ceremonies will conclude with an Outing Mass on Sunday, October 26, 2025, also at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church by 10:00 a.m.
In the statement, the family expressed gratitude to God for what they described as “a life of impact, courage, and legacy,” noting that the late Dr. Chuma-Odili was “a devoted son, visionary leader, and cultural icon who lived and died in the service of truth, heritage, and humanity.”
It would be recalled that the entire Ogbunike community and the Anambra State media fraternity were thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Dr. Chuma-Odili in September 2025. Reports indicated that the renowned journalist slumped during a community event while joyfully interacting with women dancers. He was rushed to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit but sadly passed away a few hours later.
His unexpected demise came barely a day after he had shared a message of peace and unity on social media — a post many later described as both symbolic and prophetic, given his consistent advocacy for harmony within his community.
Dr. Chuma-Odili, fondly called Ogene Ogbunike, was widely known for his fearless journalism, eloquence, and cultural devotion. A distinguished media consultant, political commentator, and founder of the Anambra Core Media Advocates (ACMA), he was celebrated for his unwavering commitment to truth, justice, and ethical leadership.
Beyond journalism, he was deeply passionate about preserving Igbo heritage, promoting community development, and amplifying the voice of his people. His writings and public engagements often focused on cultural revival, civic responsibility, and transparent governance.
Until his death, Dr. Chuma-Odili was actively involved in the traditional leadership (igweship) affairs of Ogbunike, where he was seen as a bridge between the elders and the youth. His wisdom, courage, and relentless advocacy for fairness earned him respect across political, cultural, and religious circles.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria and beyond, as colleagues, friends, and admirers celebrate his life of service, intellect, and cultural pride. Many have described him as a man whose pen and voice consistently stood for the oppressed and whose life embodied resilience, passion, and dedication to his people.
The late Ogene Ogbunike leaves behind family, colleagues, mentees, and admirers who continue to honor his legacy one built on truth, heritage, and humanity.
