Africa’s richest man and Chief Executive Officer of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has shed light on the lesser-known versatility of crude oil, revealing that thousands of everyday items — including clothing — are derived from petroleum products.
Speaking during an interview with Arise TV, Dangote surprised many viewers when he disclosed that the outfit he wore during the interview was made from oil-based materials, not cotton.
According to him, crude oil’s usefulness goes far beyond fueling cars and generators. It is a key component in the production of numerous household and industrial goods.
“What people forget when it comes to oil is that from oil, you produce over 6,800 items,” Dangote explained. “So, when people talk about moving away from oil, they need to understand that oil is not just about fuel. For instance, the outfit I’m wearing is made from oil, not cotton. The same thing applies to you. Even when you look at most vehicles, you’ll find that about 35% of their components are made from oil — particularly plastics.”
Dangote’s statement underscores the depth of oil’s role in modern life, emphasizing that the global conversation around renewable energy and sustainability must also consider the vast number of industries that depend on oil-based materials.
