The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the death of a notorious suspected assassin and armed robber identified as Saater, a native of Wannune in Tarka Local Government Area, who had been on the police wanted list for years over multiple murders and violent crimes.
According to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, the late suspect was linked to several high-profile killings including the assassination of the Hunters’ Commander, Mr. Aondoakaa Yayol, on June 20, 2025, and the earlier murder of Mrs. Kashimana Yayol, the Commander’s wife, on February 11, 2023, both in Wannune.
Following the incidents, the suspect reportedly fled the area and had been on the run ever since. However, credible intelligence later revealed that he had secretly returned to Makurdi with plans to launch new attacks.
Acting swiftly on this information, police operatives mounted surveillance and later intercepted the suspect along George Akume Way, Makurdi, on October 18, 2025.
Upon sighting the officers, Saater reportedly opened fire, sparking a fierce gun battle. Police returned fire, eventually subduing and arresting him.
The suspect sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and was immediately taken to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) for treatment, where he was later confirmed dead.
Items recovered from the scene include:
- 🪖 One AK-47 rifle
- 🔫 One locally fabricated short gun
- 💥 Several rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition and cartridges
- 📱 Seven SIM cards suspected to have been stolen
DSP Edet noted that the successful operation demonstrates the Command’s commitment to ensuring safety and justice across Benue State, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to track down other criminals connected to Saater’s gang.
