Tragedy struck the Nigerian Army community after a medical officer, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, died from severe burns allegedly inflicted by his wife during a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.
The incident, which occurred on September 22, 2025, has sent shockwaves through the barracks and beyond, raising urgent concerns about domestic violence and mental health within military families.
According to reports, Lt. Haruna who served as the Regimental Medical Officer of the 6 Battalion got into a heated argument with his wife, Mrs. Samson Haruna, which tragically escalated. During the confrontation, she allegedly poured petrol on him and set him on fire, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.
Soldiers and medical staff at the scene rushed to his aid and stabilized him at the Military Reference Section within the barracks before transferring him to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, despite doctors’ efforts, Lt. Haruna succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
Authorities have since arrested Mrs. Haruna, who is currently in custody as investigations continue. The Nigerian Army and relevant security agencies are yet to release an official statement detailing the outcome of preliminary findings.
The heartbreaking case has reignited public conversations around domestic violence, anger management, and the need for emotional and psychological support in relationships especially among security personnel and their families, who often face intense pressure from work-related stress.
As the investigation unfolds, Nigerians continue to express sorrow over the tragic loss of a young officer whose life was cut short by domestic conflict.
