Alexis Ohanian Playfully Claps Back at Stephen A. Smith Over Serena Williams Comments

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian finally got the chance to jokingly “get his lick back” at Stephen A. Smith during a recent appearance on ESPN’s First Take, months after the sports analyst made controversial remarks about his marriage to Serena Williams.

Smith, 57, had previously criticized Williams, 44, for appearing during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show performance earlier this year. The retired tennis star was seen crip walking on stage while Lamar performed his diss track to Drake, Not Like Us. Because Williams and Drake once dated, many fans speculated that her cameo was a subtle jab at the rapper.

Smith didn’t hold back at the time, saying on First Take:

“If I’m married and my wife is going to join trolling her ex, go back to his a–. ‘Cause clearly you don’t belong with me. What you worried about him for and you’re with me? Bye.”

Months later, Ohanian seized the opportunity to address those comments during his own First Take appearance — this time as a guest promoting his all-women’s professional track meet event in New York City.

With a grin, Ohanian asked Smith, “Also, Stephen A. Smith, I think you had some marriage advice for me, is that right?”

Caught off guard, Smith laughed and replied, “Headlines are headlines, we can get into that another time. Oh no, I am not qualified. Marital advice? Oh no, not me.”

Ohanian then delivered a sharp but humorous comeback:

“You haven’t been married before, right? ’Cause I give advice to plenty of founders who want to build billion-dollar companies. And the reason I do that is because I build billion-dollar companies. So I generally try to stay in my lane with advice.”

The playful exchange drew laughter before co-host MJ Acosta Ruiz quickly cut to a commercial break.

Meanwhile, Williams addressed the controversy in a TIME100 interview earlier this year, firmly denying that her Super Bowl appearance had anything to do with Drake.

“Absolutely not,” she said. “I would never do that. And that was sad, that anyone would ever think that. Obviously I can see how someone would think that. But absolutely not. I have never had negative feelings towards him. We’ve known him for so many years.”
