FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has issued a strong warning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cautioning that allowing former presidential candidate Peter Obi to return could destroy the party.
Speaking during an interview, Wike dismissed growing calls for Obi’s comeback, questioning the sincerity behind it. He recalled Obi’s past criticism of the PDP, describing it as “rotten,” and wondered why the party should now be considered good enough for him to pursue his ambitions. According to Wike, such a move would be driven purely by personal ambition rather than principles or ideology.
“If you want to destroy this party, dare it – bring Obi. There is no way he will come back just because of ambition. No more ideology, no longer principle,” he stated.
His comments come as the PDP’s National Executive Committee recently resolved to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, while maintaining its existing formula for the National Working Committee ahead of the November convention. The decision followed a report presented by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, who chaired the zoning committee.
The zoning debate remains a sensitive issue in the PDP. During the 2023 general election, the party threw its presidential ticket open, producing Atiku Abubakar as its candidate. That decision sparked discontent among southern leaders, including Wike, who argued it was unjust. Atiku eventually lost to Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Meanwhile, Peter Obi, who ran under the Labour Party in 2023 and has since aligned with the African Democratic Congress coalition, is widely believed to be considering another presidential bid in 2027. His potential return to the PDP continues to stir speculation and division within the party.
The question now is: will Obi’s comeback strengthen the PDP ahead of 2027, or will it trigger the collapse Wike has warned about?
