Viral Video: Nigerian Student in Tears as UK Revokes Visa for Exceeding 20-Hour Work Limit

A viral video of a Nigerian student weeping uncontrollably has sparked widespread sympathy and debate after she revealed that her UK student visa was revoked just weeks before her graduation.

The young woman, who travelled to the UK in 2022 for her BSc degree, said her three-year academic journey has been cut short after she mistakenly exceeded the 20-hour work limit permitted for international students.

Breaking down in tears, she shared how life took a difficult turn after losing her father in 2023, an incident that left her in deep depression. She recalled the pain of not being able to attend his burial, watching the ceremony only via video call.

Determined to make him proud, she resolved to graduate with a first-class degree. To cope with depression, she surrounded herself with people and spent more time at work, which she described as her “happy place.” In the process, she unknowingly breached UK visa rules.

According to her, when the UK Home Office questioned her employer, she admitted the mistake and assumed the matter was resolved. But earlier this year, she was contacted again, responded honestly, and thought it was settled only to later receive a devastating notice that she had violated her visa conditions and must leave the country immediately.

Her sponsoring university also withdrew its support, leaving her stranded just weeks away from completing her programme. Despite her pleas to be allowed to finish her degree online from Nigeria, her request was reportedly rejected.

Under UK immigration law, international students are permitted to work only 20 hours per week during academic terms, with full-time work allowed only during official breaks. Breaching this condition can result in visa cancellation, fines, or deportation.

Her story has triggered emotional reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing outrage and calling for leniency. Others argue the case highlights the harsh realities of immigration policies and the struggles faced by international students trying to balance survival with academics abroad.
