Authorities in South Africa have arrested two Nigerian nationals in connection with the alleged kidnapping and murder of a 49-year-old man in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga Province.
The suspects, identified as Chinedu Chukwu (39) and Ikena Obi (43), were apprehended following an intensive police investigation into the disappearance of the victim, Gift Combrinck, a resident of Kellysville, Lydenburg.
According to Sergeant Thulisile Magagula, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Provincial Police Command, the case began when Combrinck was reported missing on September 23, 2025. Police immediately launched a search operation and opened a missing person file.
Tragically, just two days later, on September 25, Combrinck’s body was discovered near De Clerq Street in Lydenburg. Early investigations suggested that he had been kidnapped before being killed, which directed detectives toward the two Nigerian suspects.
Following their arrests, both men were formally charged with kidnapping and murder and appeared before the Mashishing Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga. The case, however, was postponed until October 2, 2025, to enable investigators to verify the travel documents of the suspects and to allow for further inquiries into their possible involvement in organized criminal activities.
In a statement, the acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrests and expressed confidence in the investigative process.
“We trust that justice will prevail and that a thorough investigation will be conducted,” he said. “The SAPS remains committed to ensuring the safety of communities and bringing all perpetrators of violent crimes to book.”
The case has drawn widespread attention in Mpumalanga, with residents of Lydenburg expressing shock at the brutal killing. Community leaders have also urged authorities to strengthen security and intensify efforts to tackle crimes linked to both local and foreign suspects in the province.
Meanwhile, South African police say investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspects acted alone or were part of a wider network. Officials have assured the public that more details will be made available as the case progresses.
