Shock and grief have trailed the sudden death of South Africa’s Ambassador to France, Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, who was found lifeless at the foot of the Hyatt Regency Hotel, a high-rise building in western Paris, on Tuesday.
According to information released by the Paris prosecutor’s office, the discovery came a day after Ambassador Mthethwa had been declared missing by his wife. She reportedly raised the alarm after receiving a disturbing text message from him late on Monday.
Authorities disclosed that a security window on the 22nd floor of the hotel, where the ambassador was said to have been lodged, had been forcefully opened. French media outlets, including Le Parisien, reported that Mthethwa may have taken his own life, though investigators have yet to confirm the cause of death.
South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation has since confirmed the tragic news, stating that French authorities are conducting a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the diplomat’s passing.
Ambassador Mthethwa, a seasoned public servant and respected diplomat, represented South Africa in France and played a key role in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. His death has left colleagues, friends, and the South African diplomatic community in deep mourning.
Officials have urged the public to await the outcome of the official investigation as details continue to emerge.
