The Delta State Police Command has arrested a mother, a nurse, and three other suspects in connection with the alleged sale of a newborn baby in Ika North East Local Government Area of the state.
The case was first reported on September 25, 2025, when human rights activist Osim Daniel petitioned the police on behalf of Morka Celestine, who alleged that his neighbor, Joy Osoya, had sold her newborn shortly after delivery.
Following the petition, detectives attached to Owa-Oyibu Police Division immediately swung into action and arrested Osoya. During interrogation, she reportedly confessed to the crime and led investigators to the residence of Angela Emi, a nurse who had delivered the baby on September 22.
According to police sources, Emi was the one who allegedly facilitated the transaction, arranging for the sale of the infant at ₦1.5 million. Osoya further confessed that she was given ₦1 million as her share from the deal.
In the course of the investigation, police recovered ₦555,000 from Osoya as part of the proceeds. She, alongside Emi and three other suspects linked to the crime, have since been taken into custody.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed that efforts are ongoing to locate and safely recover the baby. Meanwhile, authorities have disclosed that the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Asaba, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The incident has drawn public outrage, with many calling for justice and stronger measures against the rising menace of child trafficking in Nigeria.
