In a recent YouTube sermon, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, emphasized the importance of work as a prerequisite for marriage, grounding his message in the biblical account of creation.
Citing Genesis 2:15–18, Adeboye explained that God first gave Adam the responsibility of tending the Garden of Eden before creating Eve. According to him, this sequence highlights the divine principle that men must secure work before seeking a wife.
“Genesis chapter 2 from verse 15 to 18 shows that God gave man work before He gave him a wife,” Adeboye said. “That is why when some people got angry when I told my daughters, ‘Don’t marry a jobless man,’ and they claimed they know the Bible, I told them they don’t know the Bible.”
The cleric reiterated that responsibility and provision are foundational to marriage.
“He gave Adam work. Take care of this garden before He now said, ‘I think this fellow should have a wife.’ You have no work; don’t look for a wife,” he stated.
Adeboye’s remarks have reignited public debate on the role of financial stability in marriage, especially as many young Nigerians face economic challenges amid rising living costs.
Known for anchoring his teachings on biblical principles, the RCCG leader often addresses social and family-related issues in his sermons. This latest message serves as a reminder, he said, that preparedness and responsibility are key ingredients in building strong and lasting homes.
