A Nigerian cinematographer, Joshua Akinkunmi Akinbode, has stirred conversations online after declaring that he cannot marry a woman like his mother, despite describing her as phenomenal, prayerful, and sacrificial.
Akinbode made the statement in a heartfelt birthday message to his mother on Monday, September 29, 2025, where he expressed deep love and gratitude for her prayers, sacrifices, and unwavering strength.
According to him, the decision is not rooted in disrespect but in the realization that marriage in today’s world requires more than domestic skills and sacrificial service.
“My mother is a phenomenal woman. I can never deny that. She is a prayer warrior, a tireless cook, everything good, everything strong, everything sacrificial. Yet, I cannot marry someone like her. Not because she is lacking, but because the world has shifted,” he wrote.
He explained that while his mother’s sacrifices laid the foundation for his life, modern relationships demand emotional vulnerability, intellectual connection, and shared growth.
“Today, marriages are not only held by food on the table or the labour of hands that never rest, but also by deep conversations, emotional vulnerability, and partnerships rooted in shared growth,” Akinbode said.
Despite his stance, he described his mother as irreplaceable, adding that her prayers and sacrifices remain the backbone of his life.
“Mummy, may your days be filled with the same joy you have poured into ours. Happy Birthday to the woman who is not just my mother but my forever blessing,” he concluded.
