A British couple has shared the remarkable story of their two children who, despite being conceived on the very same day, were born five years apart.
Siobhan Rigby, 36, and her husband Vincent, 37, from Ipswich in Suffolk, became parents to their daughter Charlotte in 2018 following a long and difficult journey with IVF. Years later, in 2023, they welcomed their son Noah conceived at the same time as Charlotte but born half a decade later.
The couple’s path to parenthood was shaped by Vincent’s health battle. At just 23, only months after their wedding, Vincent was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He endured chemotherapy and surgery, and though he was later declared cancer-free, doctors warned that conceiving naturally might be very unlikely.
In 2015, the Rigbys began IVF treatment, undergoing five rounds funded by the NHS. Along the way, Siobhan suffered two miscarriages, experiences that left her deeply anxious about whether they would ever have a child. Finally, in 2017, they learned they were expecting Charlotte, who was born in July 2018.
During the IVF process, ten embryos were created and frozen for the future. Charlotte was one of them.
As Charlotte grew older, she began asking for a sibling. When she started school, Siobhan and Vincent decided it was the right time to try again. This time, the couple had to pay privately for the transfer procedure, which cost £3,500—an amount Siobhan saved through working overtime.
To their joy, the first attempt worked. In October 2022, they learned they were expecting again, and Noah was born in June 2023.
Technically, Charlotte and Noah are fraternal twins, as both were conceived from embryos created on the same day. However, their mum says they could not be more different.
“They are totally different. They look completely different. They are just like normal siblings,” Siobhan explained. “When I tell people they are technically twins but five years apart, they are amazed.”
Despite their differences, the siblings share the typical bond of brother and sister complete with occasional fights and plenty of affection.
Looking back on their journey, Siobhan reflects with gratitude. “It was pretty amazing. I cried when Charlotte was born. With Noah, it was just as wonderful. Both of them are healthy and thriving.”
She also hopes their experience will inspire others who may be struggling with fertility: “Keep going, keep hoping, and keep faith it will work.”
