A wave of shock has hit the Catholic community in Enugu State following the brutal killing of Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya, parish priest of St. Charles Catholic Church, Eha-Ndiagu, Eha-Alumonah, Nsukka LGA.
The incident occurred on Friday evening as the cleric was returning from Enugu. According to eyewitnesses, the assailants, who were riding on a motorcycle, trailed his vehicle until they caught up with him near the site of an ongoing Type C hospital project. They reportedly shot at his car tyres to force it to stop, before approaching and shooting him several times at close range.
While some initial reports suggested the attack might have been linked to kidnapping, residents believe it was more of a targeted assassination, as the priest was alone in the car and no attempt was made to abduct him.
The late Fr. Eya hailed from Ugbaike in Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area. His sudden death has left parishioners and locals in deep mourning, with many describing it as a tragic loss not only to the Catholic Church but to the entire Nsukka Diocese.
