The father of Christiana Idowu, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has appealed to Nigerians for help, expressing frustration that almost one year after her death, justice has not been served.
Christiana was declared missing in August 2024 while travelling from her home in Itaoluwo, Ikorodu, to the University of Lagos, Yaba, where she was undergoing her Industrial Training. Investigations later led to the arrest of Ayomide Adeleye, a 23-year-old philosophy student of Olabisi Onabanjo University.
Adeleye confessed to luring Christiana to his home under the pretext of repairing her phone, strangling her, and extorting ₦360,000 from her mother while pretending the victim was still alive. Police traced him through his SportyBet account, where he uploaded his National Identification Number.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that Adeleye was handed over by the Nigerian Army and was later remanded in Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre by Magistrate Court 13A, Ogba, on September 26, 2024. The court ordered his continued detention pending advice from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP).
Speaking in a video obtained by Punch Online on Sunday, Christiana’s father, Mr. Idowu Oluwafemi, lamented that the family has been left in the dark about the progress of the case.
“It’s getting to a year now and the boy was arrested in the police custody. I’ve not heard anything concerning the case… I want you Nigerians to come to my aid. I can’t just allow a girl to go like that,” he pleaded.
The father described his late daughter as a brilliant and promising young woman, appealing for public support to ensure justice is served.
Reacting to the video, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, assured that the suspect remains in custody. He cited a January 6, 2025 statement by the Nigerian Correctional Service, which dismissed rumors of Adeleye’s release.
According to the NCoS, the inmate with Custody Number S-1995/24 is still being held at Kirikiri Maximum Prison for charges of kidnapping and murder, and will remain there pending further court directives.
The grieving family is now calling on authorities and the public to ensure that the matter is not swept under the carpet.
