Authorities in Columbus, Ohio, have filed charges against a woman after her 3-year-old son accidentally shot and killed himself with a gun that was brought into her home by a visitor.
The tragic incident happened on the morning of September 22 at a residence in the 6600 block of Kodiak Drive, near US-33 and Gender Road. Police identified the victim as Cartier Smith.
According to investigators, 29-year-old Carley Dials was in bed with Sean Perrin, who had brought the handgun into her home. Perrin allegedly placed the weapon on the bedroom floor before leaving. Around 3 a.m., Dials reportedly moved the gun and wedged it between a mattress and the wall.
Hours later, around 8 a.m., Cartier entered the room, discovered the unsecured firearm, and fatally shot himself. Dials immediately contacted authorities, but the boy succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
When police arrived at the scene, Perrin had already fled. He was later arrested without incident. Investigators said Perrin had no legal permission to possess a firearm.
Dials has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, while Perrin faces a weapons under disability charge.
The heartbreaking case has reignited conversations about gun safety and the importance of securing firearms around children.
