Chicago, IL – A 27-year-old mother of nine, Tia Bell, was tragically shot and killed in Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood late Thursday night, leaving her children without their mother and her community in mourning.
According to ABC 7 Chicago, the shooting happened around 10:47 p.m. on West Gladys Avenue. Police said Bell was standing outside with a 26-year-old man when a gunman opened fire. Bell was struck multiple times and rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The man who was with her was also shot but survived and remains in fair condition. A third victim, another 26-year-old man, later walked into a hospital with a graze wound that police linked to the same incident.
Bell’s sudden death has left nine children without their mother. Her family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her children, raising just under $1,000 so far.
“Tia was everything to her children. Now they are left with a hole no one can ever fill,” a family member said.
Bell’s killing was one of several deadly shootings that night. Just hours earlier, two men 38-year-old Deandre Russell and 28-year-old Nurrie Foy — were killed in a separate attack on South Maplewood Avenue.
The surge in gun violence prompted Mayor Brandon Johnson and Police Superintendent Larry Snelling to meet with West Side residents this week to discuss urgent safety measures.
So far, no arrests have been made in connection with either shooting. Detectives are investigating both cases as Chicago continues to grapple with ongoing gun violence that has shaken neighborhoods and devastated families.
