The Lagos State Police Command has announced the arrest of 28-year-old ex-convict, John Samuel, who is alleged to be a notorious armed robbery kingpin and hired assassin.
According to a report on Sunday, September 21, 2025, police said Samuel had only recently completed a six-year jail term before returning to violent crime.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Command’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, revealed that Samuel was behind a brazen armed robbery that took place on August 18 at Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja.
Armed with an English pistol, Samuel allegedly shot and wounded a businessman, identified as Gbenga Obama, before forcefully snatching his expensive gold necklace and other valuables. His accomplice was said to have waited on a motorcycle to aid their escape.
Oluseyi explained:
“CCTV footage clearly captured the suspect firing at the victim before taking his necklace. The victim, who sustained gunshot injuries, has since been treated and discharged.”
Investigations further revealed that Samuel sold the stolen necklace for ₦4 million, a sum far below its market value. Police say he has since confessed to the crime and is providing more details about his criminal network.
The arrest has been hailed as a major breakthrough in the Command’s ongoing efforts to crack down on violent robberies across Lagos, particularly those involving repeat offenders.
Authorities added that efforts are underway to apprehend Samuel’s accomplices and dismantle the wider syndicate believed to be involved in a series of armed robberies in the state.
