A British woman, Jessica Cariad Hopkins, 34, has tragically been killed in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, after what police believe was a violent dispute with her flatmate.
Jessica, originally from Harpenden, Hertfordshire, was discovered in a park near Koh Pich City Hall late on Friday night. According to local reports, witnesses saw an argument escalate into a physical fight before Jessica was fatally attacked. Emergency responders arrived shortly after midnight, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, identified as Kidikila Nganda Glodie, 33, was arrested 17 hours later at a beauty salon in Phnom Penh. Police say she has confessed to the killing and is currently in custody facing legal proceedings. Authorities believe the incident may have been linked to a love triangle dispute, describing the case as “messy and tragic.”
Jessica had been living in Cambodia for several years, working as a teacher and actively engaging with the local community. Friends and colleagues remembered her as a compassionate and generous woman who always wanted to help others.
One close friend, Sophie Marston, wrote on Facebook:
“We couldn’t have been closer. Jess was a wonderful human, selfless, and kind. She took the world’s problems on her shoulders. It’s why she stayed in Cambodia she just wanted to help anyone and everyone. I can’t believe I’m talking in past tense.”
Tributes have also described her as a “gentle soul,” a “beautiful friend,” and a “dedicated teacher” who will be deeply missed by those who knew her.
Her family, supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), have asked for privacy during this difficult time. The FCDO confirmed it is in contact with Cambodian authorities as investigations continue.
The news of Jessica’s death has shocked both the expatriate and local community in Phnom Penh, where she was well known for her warmth and commitment to those around her.
