The journalism community is in shock following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a prominent news anchor with Arise News, who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025.
Maduagwu, fondly known as “Sommie” by friends and colleagues, was just 29 years old. Born on December 26, 1995, she had built a reputation as a gifted anchor, reporter, and producer, admired for her eloquence, professionalism, and commitment to impactful storytelling.
Before joining Arise News, she trained as a lawyer, a background that shaped her sharp analysis and brought exceptional depth to her reporting.
In a statement on Monday, Arise News confirmed the heartbreaking loss:
“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of Arise News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police. Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”
The Nigeria Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. Authorities have promised a thorough probe and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
Her colleagues, viewers, and admirers across Nigeria have since taken to social media to express grief and pay tribute to her legacy, describing her as one of the most promising voices in Nigerian broadcast journalism.
