Tension has once again gripped residents of Benue State following reports that suspected armed herdsmen on Sunday ambushed a commercial bus and abducted all passengers on board along the Makurdi–Naka highway.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the vehicle, which had departed from Makurdi en route to Naka, was attacked before it could reach its destination. According to accounts, the assailants, armed with sophisticated weapons, forced the bus to a halt and ordered the passengers out before marching them into the surrounding bushes at gunpoint.
The number of passengers taken remains unclear at press time, but locals say the attack caused panic among other road users, many of whom made frantic U-turns to avoid the scene.
When contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Edet Udeme, said she had not yet received any official briefing on the incident. She, however, promised that the situation would be investigated and confirmed before further updates are provided.
The Makurdi–Naka road has become notorious in recent years for frequent attacks, kidnappings, and ambushes, with travelers often falling victim to heavily armed gangs suspected to be herdsmen operating within the area. Security analysts say the rising trend of abductions in Benue underscores the urgent need for stronger patrols, intelligence gathering, and community vigilance along highways.
