A wave of bandit attacks in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State has left at least five people dead and resulted in the abduction of several Islamic clerics as well as the district head of Rinaye.
According to eyewitnesses, the attacks spanned three consecutive days, with armed men storming villages, killing residents, and kidnapping others. In Rinaye town, three people were confirmed killed, while the district head and local clerics were taken captive.
Reports suggest that more than 10 villages have since been deserted, as families flee the worsening violence.
The attacks have sparked outrage among locals, with hundreds of residents staging a protest along the major highway connecting Sokoto, Kebbi, and Niger states. Protesters demanded urgent government intervention and stronger security measures to protect their communities.
Some displaced residents expressed frustration, saying they have received no assistance from either government authorities or security agencies so far.
Both the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed receiving reports of displaced persons from the affected area. Assessments of the humanitarian situation are ongoing.
