More facts have emerged surrounding the tragic death of Sommie Maduagwu, a former beauty queen and staff of Arise News, who died in the early hours of Monday, September 29, during an armed robbery attack in the Katampe area of Abuja.
According to Arise TV presenter Ojy Okpe, their Abuja correspondents reported that Sommie’s 16-apartment building was invaded around 3 a.m. by 14 heavily armed robbers, who moved from one flat to another, dispossessing residents of their belongings. The occupants reportedly raised alarm and reached out to security agencies, but the police failed to arrive on time to intervene.
In the heat of the attack, Sommie, terrified by the chaos and commotion from adjoining apartments, tried to escape before the robbers reached her own flat. In a desperate bid for safety, she jumped out of her apartment window, sustaining severe and life-threatening injuries from the fall.
She was immediately rushed to the Maitama District Hospital, but according to reports, her treatment was delayed after hospital staff allegedly insisted on seeing a form of identification before attending to her. Despite efforts afterward, she tragically lost her life while still at the hospital.
The building’s security guard, who had bravely attempted to resist the robbers, was also shot during the invasion. He later died from his injuries, leaving behind a grieving wife and a young son.
Sommie’s sudden and heartbreaking death has left her parents, siblings, colleagues, and friends in deep sorrow. She is remembered not only for her beauty and professional excellence, but also for the warmth and light she brought to those around her.
This tragic incident has sparked renewed conversations around rising insecurity, delayed emergency response, and lapses in healthcare delivery issues many Nigerians continue to grapple with daily.
