Adamawa: Man, Son, and Nephew Arrested for Killing 60-Year-Old Woman Over Witchcraft Allegation

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested three family members for allegedly beating a 60-year-old woman, Dudu Umaru, to death on suspicion of witchcraft in Digino, Fufore Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on August 26, 2025, when the suspects identified as the deceased’s younger brother, his son, and her nephew stormed her home, accusing her of casting a spell on a teenage girl named Aisha. They allegedly attacked her with sticks, inflicting severe injuries that later led to her death.

Police spokesperson, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects confessed to their actions.

“Three men were arrested for the act and they confessed to beating her with sticks and burning her house. They claimed she was a witch who intended to harm the daughter of one of the suspects. Unfortunately, the woman later died from the injuries sustained,” Nguroje said.

One of the suspects, 50-year-old farmer Bello Usman, told police that his daughter had fallen ill and that traditional medication he administered allegedly revealed the name of the victim as the cause.

“Dudu is my uncle’s daughter. She held my daughter with witchcraft. After I gave her traditional medicine, she started calling Dudu’s name, saying she wanted to kill her. Out of anger, I went with my son and nephew to beat her. Later, I heard she had died,” Bello confessed.

He admitted that he relied on traditional incantations rather than seeking medical treatment for his daughter, a decision he now regrets.

“I regret my actions now, knowing Dudu is my cousin. I have not heard from my family since my arrest, and I don’t know about my daughter’s health,” he added.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, has directed the State CID to take over the case and warned against jungle justice and witchcraft-related violence.
