Phyna’s Sister Dies After 19 Days in Hospital
Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of Nigerian reality star Ijeoma Otabor (popularly known as Phyna), has died after being struck by a Dangote truck in Auchi, Edo State.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, August 31, 2025, following a devastating crash reportedly involving a driver alleged to be operating without a valid license. Ruth was hospitalised for 19 days before succumbing to her injuries.
Activist Raises Alarm Over Silence Before Death
Prominent Nigerian activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as Verydarkman (VDM), reacted strongly to the incident, criticising both the public and authorities for their inaction while Ruth was still fighting for her life.
“She was alive for 19 days, yet nobody spoke up. Now that she is gone, everybody wants to talk, post and trend the story. If we had raised the alarm earlier, maybe Dangote Group would have been forced to act faster,” he said in a video statement.
VDM argued that if there had been louder calls for accountability during Ruth’s hospitalisation, the Dangote Group might have been pressured to intervene sooner.
Criticism of Dangote Group and Government Agencies
The activist went further to condemn the Dangote Group for employing drivers allegedly without proper licenses, calling it a dangerous negligence for a company of such scale and influence. He described the accident as a symptom of a broader system failure in Nigeria.
According to VDM, the inability of government agencies to enforce accountability has left ordinary Nigerians exposed and unprotected. He maintained that corporations and institutions often escape responsibility, while citizens continue to pay the ultimate price.
A Tragedy That Sparks Bigger Questions
Ruth’s death has not only left her family grieving but has also reopened discussions about corporate accountability and road safety in Nigeria. With Dangote Group under scrutiny and government agencies criticised for regulatory lapses, many Nigerians are asking the same pressing question: Will this tragedy finally push authorities to enforce stricter road safety standards, or will it be another case forgotten with time?
