A Nigerian woman, aged 36, has reportedly called off her wedding just weeks before the big day after discovering that her fiancé had lied about his real age.
The story, first shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @educatedtug01, has stirred intense debate on social media about honesty, trust, and age gaps in relationships.
According to the post, the groom told his bride-to-be that he was 33 years old, making her believe there was only a three-year age gap between them. However, his mother later revealed in a conversation with the bride that he was actually 28 years old eight years younger than her.
The bride, who was comfortable with the assumed three-year difference, reportedly felt deceived and decided to cancel the marriage plans altogether.
The X post read:
“A lady called off her wedding because her fiancĂ© lied about his age. He’s 28, she’s 36… but he said 33. She was fine with the 3-year gap… wedding was next month!. The worst part? She found out from the guy’s mom. So… did she call it off because of the age or because he lied?”
The revelation sparked heated reactions online:
- @TowFunFun argued: “She’s meant to have accepted that guy like that. Women should know they can’t get what they want above 30… Who will marry her at age 36? She will soon turn 37, that’s almost 40.”
- @boye4christ2006 said: “The man made the best decision. A home built on lies can never last.”
- @OlaiboO countered: “Marriage is never about age. We should not get it twisted. She canceled because he lied, not because of his age.”
- @itzchristunique added: “There must be transparency in a relationship before you go into marriage. If that’s missing, it’s a red flag.”
- @savvymoneygirl wrote: “It’s the lie. The fact that you all are more bothered about her age than the lies of a full-grown man is troublesome.”
The incident has reignited conversations about truthfulness in relationships, with many arguing that deception rather than age difference was the real dealbreaker.
